Being particularly
interested in Hospitality Industry in Central America region, I have set up some
Google alerts about this specific area, as I think that Central American countries
have an outstanding tourism potential due to the mild tropical climate ideal
for sea and sun holidays, reach cultural heritage and welcoming optimistic
spirit! It was quite interesting for me
to read that Puerto Rico is doing great in attracting the tourists this year
with creating in 2010 the program called ‘ Puerto Rico does it better’ with the
help of US investments.
The
"Puerto Rico Does It Better" campaign is turning the Island into a
best Caribbean hotspot and is directly responsible for an inbound tourism to
Puerto Rico, especially of the US travelers, that is providing a strong boost
to the local economy. Since the launch of "Puerto Rico Does It
Better" in 2010, the Island has experienced consistent growth in its
hospitality industry, now boasting the highest hotel occupancy rate in the Caribbean.
US is investing
20 million dollars in the campaign and this year's program places an emphasis
on social media to reach American tourists.
This includes search engine marketing and optimization, the launch of
official Twitter feeds, YouTube videos, new Smartphone applications and many
others.

The good thing of the "Puerto Rico Does It Better" campaign is that the US is investing $20 mln to develop tourims opportuniies.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the article, in 2012 there will be created some 2100 more rooms and Several of these properties have been certified as "Green" by the Green Hotels Association, Green Globe, Audubon International or the U.S. Green Building Council because of their commitment to the environment and ecological health of the Island.
The problem is, the more we build hotels in the island the less there will be "wild" places to visit. The charm of the island might be lost. Usually we go to islands to "isolate" ourselves from everyday life for a moment and have a bit of rest in green and calm places.
Investing $20mln dollars to build some more hotels and destroy green places is not neccessarily a goog adea.
In some way, I agree with you, some people do go for holidays to be in peace and quite, others look for exciting new activities, others want the ‘mass tourism’ like for example Ibiza. There are different types of destinations, and, for example you won’t go to New York for peace and quite. I think that Puerto Rico plays the card of ‘mass tourism’ for Americans and it is understandable, as it was a very poor country and they prefer to receive the important investments to raise their economy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sanjerbek because if the US investors bring big money, I'm afraid they will bring big-scale tourism with them. The US hasn't had a very green-oriented policy so far and the concept of destroying wild life to build hotels is less-than green.
ReplyDeletePuerto Rico should remain a destination rich in fauna and flora.
However the constructions are very aesthetic.
Hey Alex,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your publications and comment, I totally share your point of view about the Latin-Americans potential in the hospitality industry. Like Puerto Rico is leveraging his competitive advantage which is their human capital. As we know we are really good Host.
And as we know European are trying to be more human and more close to clients, and this will push their personal services culture. And the importance of social media in the hospitality industry.
And this is a clear example of the result.
Sorry we are not just a really god host but also we are really hot.
ReplyDeleteLong live to the Southern Emisphere !!!
ReplyDeleteHey Thank you guys Noe and Redouane!
ReplyDeleteI don’t think however that the Americans are not ‘green’ active; on the contrary I think they are quite environmental conscious. And we also can’t forget the fact that most Latin American countries, like Costa Rica, are very poor and do not have any natural resources nor possibilities nor money to develop their economy either, therefore they need the foreign investments and unfortunately for the countries of the 3rd world it is the only way to get better life conditions and jobs for the population.
